Accessories can really make or break an outfit, if you are never really sure how to do it there are some simple steps you can take to make sure you get it right.

The first thing to do is to take a look at when it goes wrong. I have chosen a really simple and classic black dress from Miss Selfridge to really demonstrate what works and what doesnt.

When it all goes wrong!

Ok, this is a really gross over exaggeration of getting it wrong and I would hope that you can all see why this is so bad. Choosing contrasting colours can be fantastic as we will see later, but this look just looks like you fell over in the charity shop and landed in all of this.

Adding a mixture of textures, colour tones and styles will make the overall outfit look cheap and I can guarantee that when this outfit was on, nobody would notice your figure, smile, eyes or anything positive!

Keeping It Simple

So, one of the easiest ways to accessorize is to keep it really simple. Choose a colour or style that you want to see with the dress and add hints of it. Don’t go into overkill or you will drown the whole look and it will appear that you fell into a tin of paint.

Granted, this outfit is gorgeously styled with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s but there are plenty of alternatives which will suit your budget and still make the outfit look a hundred times classier and more expensive than the previous one.

Going for a Theme

You could also brave going along the lines of a theme. For this look I have chosen edgier accessories.

Adding Colour

Injecting colour into your wardrobe is one of the quickest and easiest ways not only to update an outfit but also to make you appear younger. Don’t be afraid of colour, play with it and see what suits you.

So you see, accessorising the same dress can give you completely different looks. Don’t be scared of trying new things, have a play about!

Be bold with the details and see what you create!
