Alexander McQueen AW'12 Aubergine Suede Baroque Punk Skull Peeptoe

Alexander McQueen AW’12 Aubergine Suede Baroque Punk Skull Peeptoe, £635.00

I much prefer Autumn/Winter trends to those of Spring/Summer. As lovely as the bright colours of SS are, I almost always end up spending the summer in shorts and vests because the heat (not that we’ve felt much of it this year) demands comfort and bare skin. One of the AW trends I’m completely obsessing over is a gothic glam look as seen on the catwalks of Versace and Roberto Cavalli. If you ever bought a pair of Alexander McQueen Skull Embellished Pumps it’s definitely time to bring them out of storage.

Gucci Sequinned Tulle Gown

Gucci Sequinned Tulle Gown, £8,100.00, Net-A-Porter

In fact, while I’m thinking of McQueen, you know he’s the perfect designer to look to for your inspiration. Think skulls and leather, not only in black but also emerald and one of this season’s ‘it’ colours: oxblood. Look to Gucci for opulent dresses or Christopher Kane for leather trim.

The question we’re all asking is how do I incorporate this trend into my AW wardrobe?

Luckily the high street has made it very easy for us and stores are awash with skull accessories, faux leather, studs and sheer fabrics. If you’re looking to get your make-up on trend opt for ghostly pale eyes and vampy lips or deep smoke and nude lips. For both fashion and beauty the possibilities are endless. Beware: this is not a trend to go all out with during the day however at night there are no limits. Try a dark coloured dress like the embroidered dip hem dress below. Pick and choose your statement accessories – there’s no need to pile on crosses, spikes and skulls all at once – but there’s no reason you can’t pair a killer necklace with small skull stud earrings.

  1. Embroidered dip hem dress by Coco’s Fortune at Topshop, £55.00
  2. Skull shower necklace by Butler & Wilson, £128.00
  3. Gold mixed metallic spike drop earrings from New Look, £3.99
  4. Spike stretch bracelet from ASOS, £8.00
  5. Crystal skull stud earrings by Butler & Wilson, £18.00
  6. Pirates of the Caribbean gold skull ring by Disney Couture, £25.00
  7. Cristina skull clasp studded box clutch from boohoo.com, £25.00

I’ve not yet shown you the most exciting thing about the gothic trend: the shoes, of course. For years I’ve been wearing my Iron Fists and while they do get compliments, I’m always told they’re an unusual choice. Not any more- now they’re perfectly on trend.

Iron Fist Goldstar Pointed Toe Platform Shoe

Iron Fist Goldstar Pointed Toe Platform Shoe from Macoo Shoes, £59.99

The Goldstar shoe is my perfect choice (I’m aiming for gold coloured accessories with this look). Iron Fist do have a large range of colourful shoes but remember this look isn’t about being ‘alternative,’ it’s about working alternative into glam. Try models such as Sugar Hiccup (the new black sequin shade is gorgeous), Tomorrow’s Sorrow or Shotgun. If you do go for colour, try to match it to a colour that runs through the rest of your outfit.
